Household Income & Expenses - Monthly Series

A Wave of the Consumer Pyramids household survey is conducted over a period of four months. The total sample is divided equally into four parts to be executed during the four months of the survey.

Wave 1 covered a sample of 158,624 households. These were divided into about 39,656 households per month.

The Household Income and Expenses, Monthly Observations database releases data every month containing observations for all households for a month. This data is released with a lag of five months. For example, the data for January would be released in the first week of June.

This lag of five months arises because all the households in the sample are surveyed over a period of four months.

While the Household Income and Expenses, Waves data files contain all the information collected during a Wave, it does not provide the income and expenditure for all households for all months of the Wave. While it contains for months of data for each household, the four months are different for different households depending upon when the survey was conducted during the four month period of the Wave. In contrast, the Household Income and Expenses, Monthly Observations data files contains income and expenditure data for all households for a month.

The monthly observations sample design is based on state-wise urban and rural stratification. Each of the urban and rural regions of a state, form a strata. There are 24 urban regions and 23 rural regions from the surveyed states. Thus, there are a total of 47 strata.

Weights are given at the strata level. Inverse probability weights are given to the sampled households. Thus, the weight of a household in the urban region of a state or the rural region of a state is the ratio of estimated households in that region to the sample size in that region.
