Title: Household Groups
Authors: Kaushik Krishnan, Mahesh Vyas

We hosted a webinar on how we conduct the world’s largest household panel survey, the Consumer Pyramids Household Survey. Kaushik Krishnan, Chief Economist and Mahesh Vyas, MD and CEO of CMIE talked about Household Groups in CPHS on Thursday, October 14 2021 to a live audience through both Zoom and YouTube. Over 70 people joined us for the presentation across both platforms.

About the event

The Consumer Pyramids Household Survey involves a sample of well over 160,000 households. The sample averaged 164,872 households per Wave over the 18 Waves between 2014 and 2019. This is a large sample that merits several groupings of households based on different classifications. Such groupings can aid analysis and help explain the characteristics of households or inform about the behaviour of households across different types of households. CMIE has created a few household groups using its processes in the hope that these could be useful to a large number of users. These groupings are explained in this webinar.

In total, there are 9 household groups in CPdx. Our groupings are intuitive and stable across time. Importantly, our groupings are not based only on the Head of the Household’s characteristics. Rather, they draw on the entire household distribution, making them more suitable for research in many cases.
