Improvement in July Response Rates

45,083 households were slotted for execution in Consumer Pyramids Household Survey for the month of July 2021. Against that target, data from 33,953 households was collected by interviewers and also accepted by supervisors. This implies a response rate of 75.31 per cent.

This marks a continuation in the recovery in response rates since the second wave of lockdowns across India that began in late April 2021. The response rate rose from 45 per cent in May to 65.5 per cent in June to 75.3 per cent in July.

The recovery in response rates has been consistent across urban and rural India. The overall average response rate of 45 per cent in May, 2021 can be broken down into 47 per cent in urban India and 41.2 per cent in rural Indian respectively.

Similarly, the response rate of 75.3 per cent in July, 2021 can be broken down into 78.9 per cent in urban India and 69 per cent in rural India. This is an improvement of 67.8 per cent and 67.7 per cent against May, 2021 across urban and rural India respectively.

Improvements in response rates came mostly from states where CPHS response rates were the lowest in June, 2021. The ten worst performing states in June, 2021 were Goa, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Kerala, West Bengal, Jharkhand, Odisha, Sikkim and Meghalaya. All but two of these states recorded increases in response rates ranging from 9 per cent improvement in the case of Goa to a 215 per cent improvement in Puducherry. Two states in the far north east, Sikkim and Meghalaya, worsened by 1 per cent and 8 per cent respectively.

The improvements made among the worst responding states in June has been partly offset by some reductions among the ten best performing states from the same month. These were Jammu & Kashmir, Chandigarh, Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and Tripura. Over half of these states saw reductions in the response rate for July, 2021.

These changes across states are to be expected. States with very low response rates are paid attention to by the survey machinery. They will usually do better in the next month. Over time, we aim for these improvements to outweigh the setbacks. This has been the case in July, 2021 resulting in an overall improvement in response rate since June, 2021. CPHS is working towards a strong closure to Wave 23, in August, 2021.
